MUNICIPAL SOUK
The souk is located halfway between the Cathedral and the Puerta Almodóvar (Almodovar Arch), between Judios and Averroes streets, next to Maimonides Square. This souk is also known as the Mercado de la Artesanía (Handicrafts Market), as many of Cordoba’s craftsmen have their workshops here.
It was the first craft market created in Spain, inaugurated in 1954 and built in the gardens of the original Casa de las Bulas. The complex has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in the General Plan for Cultural heritage.
It is an ideal place, not only to find local products, but also to learn and enjoy how they are made. This is because it is the craftsmen themselves who make these products in the public eye.
You will be able to appreciate the art of leather, leather goods, ceramics, and the famous Cordoban filigree. However, it is the leather products (cordobanes and guadamecies) that are undoubtedly the most sought after, due to their exceptional quality and tradition, since their appearance in Cordoba dates back to the arrival of the Muslims in the 8th century.
On spring and summer nights, the Zouk courtyard was also used as a Flamenco Venue or “tablao”. This space was run by Antonio Romero in the 1960s. Famous people associated with the world of flamenco such as La Tomata, Concha Calero, Merengue, Blanca del Rey, etc., have performed here. Today, “Cante Jondo” shows are still held during the month of May at the festival of the Courtyards of Cordoba.
