ROMAN BRIDGE
Unfortunately, nothing remains of the original bridge, which dates back to the 1st century B.C., the time of Julius Caesar, as it underwent various reconstructions from the beginning of the 8th century, the 15th and 17th centuries to the 19th century.
It is made up of 16 arches: 4 pointed and the rest semicircular. Of the latter, some belong to the Arabic period, while the rest of them were built later.
Since the mid-17th century, a statue of Saint Raphael, the patron saint of the city, has stood in the center of the bridge. In front of him, on the other side of the bridge, we find an altar dedicated to the patron saints of Cordoba: the martyrs San Acisclo and Santa Victoria.
After the last restoration of the bridge at the beginning of this century, road traffic was banned both on the bridge and in the surrounding areas on both sides. This allows the visitor to walk peacefully from the Torre de la Calahorra to the Cathedral, passing through the Bridge Gate and Saint Raphael’s Triumph.
