THE BRIDGE GATE
This was the main entrance to the Medina from the south during the Roman and Muslim periods. It was rebuilt in the second half of the 16th century in preparation for the next visit of King Felipe II. Its designer and director was Hernán Ruiz II.
The Gate of this arch has a single span and used to have terraced houses on either side. They were destroyed at the beginning of the last century and the interior was redesigned to unify the structure and architectural decoration, isolating it from the city walls.
Above the opening, the lintel of which is made up of voussoirs, there is an inscription which reads: “REINANDO LA SACRA CATÓLICA REAL MAGESTAD DEL REI DON PHELIPE NUESTRO SEÑOR SEGUNDO DE ESTE NOMBRE” (REIGNING THE HOLY CATHOLIC ROYAL MAGESTY OF KING PHELIPE OUR SECOND LORD OF HIS NAME).
Its majesty erects in front of the Roman Bridge, and it anticipates the monumental grandeur that awaits the traveler as he crosses it and enters the medina, now known as the Jewish Quarter.
