One of Cordoba’s three surviving medieval gates was built over an ancient Caliphate gateway to the city. It was reformed several times; the last reform took place at the beginning of the 19th century. Thanks to it, the lower part of the semicircular arch that crowns the opening was covered with a wall.
This gate, made up of two towers topped with crenellations, breaks through the western wall of the city, at the level of Cairuan Street. In this street begins a beautiful pond that has been draining a stream since the first quarter of the last century.
To the left of this door, since the middle of the 20th century, there has been a bronze statue of the Roman Philosopher Lucius Annaeus Seneca, who was born in Cordoba.
Through this gate we enter the Jewsih Quarter, where a junction of narrow, shady alleys will lead us to corners and small squares of incomparable charm.
