PLAZA DE LA CORREDERA (CORREDERA SQUARE)
Located in the center of the city, it is the only quadrangular “Plaza Mayor” in Andalusia. It has a rectangular floor plan with a portico and arches in the lower part, which contrasts with those built in Castilian cities. For this reason, it is considered to be unique in Andalusia.
This square is thought to have originally been part of the Roman Circus. Archeological works carried out in 1959 in its subsoil have revealed some splendid mosaics belonging to that period. Today, they are exhibited in the Fortress of the Catholic Monarchs.
It first housed the Corregidor, and then was used as a Prison until 1821. The square has undergone various transformations and uses, from a food market to a venue for countless celebrations and shows. In fact, it was the site chosen by the Inquisition and used as gallows by the French at the beginning of the 19th century. It was also used for bullfighting (hence its name) and still preserves an alley called “Toril” (bullpen).
Nowadays it is a place for meeting, leisure and scape, and it is difficult to decide when the best time of the day is to enjoy; be it the intense midday light, the sunset or the dark nights. It is sometime bustling and noisy, sometimes mysterious and silent.
