It is located in the former Palacio “Los Páez de Castillejo”, in a new annex. It houses a large collection of 33500 pieces from prehistory to the Middle Ages.
The Archaeological and Ethnological Museum of Cordoba has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest since 1962. Like most Spanish museum institutions, its collections have been moved from various buildings around the city to its current headquarters in the Historic Center of Cordoba, declared a World Heritage Site.
The museum is currently undergoing a profound process of change because of the expansion and reform project that has been launched. The first phase of the extension has been inaugurated and is now open to the public with more than 3,000m2 of exhibition space, a restoration laboratory, a booking area, offices, a large library, and archives. There is also a thematic exhibition: Cordoba, a meeting of cultures. We will discover the part of the archaeological site preserved in the basement, which is also open to the public.
This exhibition, featuring important pieces from the permanent collection, will remain open until the next phase of the project is completed: the museum adaptation of the Renaissance Palace. It will be a new installation of the permanent exhibition that will enhance all the areas where the archaeological site is preserved.
