It is the only Military Monument preserved in the city of Cordoba. Its construction was ordered by King Alfonso XI and it was built in the 14th century on the remnants of the Caliphate Alcazar. It is interesting to note how, over the centuries and up to the present day, it has undergone various modifications and extensions according to its function.
Thus, it served as the residence of the Monarchs during their visits to Cordoba, the seat of the Inquisition during the reign of the Catholic Monarchs, and it was used as a prison in the first half of the 19th century.
The greatest expansion took place during the Trastamara period, when this family ordered to build gardens, different fountains and several pools, among other things.
Today, only three of the four towers that marked the perimeter of the Fortress remain. The entrance of the monument is located under one of these three, the so-called “Tower of the Lions”.
The chapel known as the Chapel of the Inquisition was transformed into the Hall of Mosaics in the middle of the last century. It takes its name from the numerous Roman mosaics (found in the basement of the Corredera Square) that decorate its walls. Today it is used as a hall for the most solemn municipal celebrations.
Not only is the building itself majestic, but so are the gardens, which once was the vegetable patch of this place. These gardens were also renovated in the middle of the last century. In them we find several fountains which lead to successive ponds channeled and connected in a staggered manner. These fountains, together with an extensive and well-tended plant display, liven up the pleasant strolls.
