We will also visit the porticoed building, the Plaza de Armas, the mosque where Abderraman the Third used to pray, the outside of the Rich Hall, the residential area of the high dignitaries of the time, such as the house of Yafar (Vizier of the Grand Caliph), and the small servants’ quarters.

Medinat Al-Zahra is a palatine city ordered to build by Abd Al-Rahman the Third in the first half of the 10th century and, definitely, a true reflection of the splendor that the city of Córdoba witnessed after his proclamation as the first Caliph of Al-Andalus. This way, he moved both, government and his habitual residence, from the Umayyah Alcazar to this new city. Anyway, he kept the Alcazar in use due to its proximity to the great Aljima Mosque. Although only a tenth of the palatine city has been excavated at the present time, this area contains the entire noble area of the palace.
It was strategically built in the foothills of Sierra Morena, few kilometers away from Cordoba, so it was easier to control the rest of the territories of the city and the entire countryside. It is staggered in three terraces; the first two are walled because they corresponded to the Caliph’s dwellings, and then we find those of the high dignitaries and the government rooms and military dependencies. The lower area is still to be excavated and it is the place in which we find the proper city; here there are the residences of the inhabitants as well as the royal factory craft, the mint, or even a prison similar to the one in the Umayyad fortress.
