VIANA PALACE
Nestled between the churches of Saint Andres, Saint Agustin and Saint Marina, in the heart of northern La Axerquia, is the Palace of the Marquises of Viana, whose title is linked to that of the Marquises of Villaseca, the original owners of this 14th-century manor house.
The building, now a museum, retains much of the furniture and decoration of its last tenants.
But what really fascinates the visitor is the garden and the 12 patios, each with a different design and floral decoration that makes them unique.
The rectangular garden has a large central fountain and a maze of ornamental shrubs and trees.
We can walk through any of the courtyards; from the Main Courtyard or the Reception Courtyard, which is the one at the entrance, to the Chapel Courtyard, the Gardeners’ Courtyard, the Grilles’ Courtyard, and the Columns’ Courtyard, among others. This is a very pleasant route, as we will discover different structures, ornaments, vegetation, aromas, and colors that will delight and surprise us in each of them.
There are almost 50 rooms, both on the ground floor and upstairs, distributed around the 12 courtyards. All this makes up the structure of a typical Roman house, something we can discover on our route through the patios of Cordoba.
The Porcelain Rooms, which contain part of the 18th century porcelain collection of the Company of the Indies, by Tobias, deserve special mention. Of its decorated walls, the passage of the Apparition of Saint Raphael to Tobias, the Mosaic Room, whose floor is covered by a large 4th-century Roman mosaic brought from the Palace of Moratalla in Hornachuelos. Nor should we forget the Goya’s, so called because of the tapestries and carpets woven in the Real Fábrica de Santa Barbara, four of which feature the painter’s cartoons.
