SYNAGOGUE
According to some documents, whose data could not be confirmed, there were other synagogues in our town, and this is the only one still standing.
Built at the beginning of the 14th century, it was used as a hospital after the Catholic Monarchs expelled the unconverted Jews in 1492. It was later consecrated as a chapel to the patron saints of the shoemakers’ guild.
The synagogue part of the building has a square base, and it is divided into a foyer and a prayer room. A wooden staircase leads to a women’s area on the first floor. The walls of the prayer hall only retain parts of the original decoration in the upper area. As the lower area, no part of the tiled plinth that might have been present at the time has survived.
Both the lobed arches in the niche where the Pentateuch would have been placed (east wall) and the north and west walls are very similar to the decoration of the Toledo synagogues. Although the latter are larger and more important, there are not as many original remnants as the one in Cordoba.
At the end of the 18th century, and due to the increasing deterioration of the ceiling, forced its replacement by a vault covered with plaster. As a result, some of the inscriptions on the walls have been covered over.
