This square, one of the most popular and famous in Cordoba, is accessed from Conde Torres Cabrera Street, at the opposite end of which is “Cuesta del Bailío”. This square has been called this since the beginning of the 17th century, when the convent of Los Capuchinos was founded, after which it is named.
It has a sober design, as it is a cobbled rectangle of granite slabs with stones inside and whitewashed walls. It is “nothing more than a rectangle of lime and sky”, to quote the poet Ricardo Molina.
The Capuchinos Square is headed by the famous Cristo de Los Faroles (Christ of the Lanterns), illuminated by eight lanterns that surround the work and give name to the work of the stonemason Juan Navarro. However, the true dedication of this work is “Cristo de los Desagravios y Misericordias” (Christ of Amends and Mercy), according to the tombstone in one of the walls of the convent.
It has been the subject of countless songs and “coplas”, resulting the most famous of which was sung by Antonio Molina and used as the basis of the film El Cristo de los Faroles. It is also home to the Convent of the Dolores and the Hospital of San Jacinto, a must for any visitor.
