CALAHORRA TOWER/LIVING MUSEUM OF AL ANDALUS
Crossing the Roman Bridge in the opposite direction to the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba, we come across a building that usually goes unnoticed: The Calahorra Tower, which is located within the boundaries of the Historic Center of Cordoba, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1994. This tower, of Muslim origin, has witnessed many events in the history of Cordoba, such as the arrival of Fernando III of Castile during the Christian conquest of Cordoba. It has also been used as a barracks, a hospital and a school for girls in the 19th century. The Calahorra Tower was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1931, and years later it reached the highest category of protection. It was at this time that its value began to be recognized and in 1987 it was decided to be used as a Living Museum of Al-Andalus.
Inside this museum there are different rooms where we can see the example of the coexistence of three cultures: Christian, Jewish, and Muslim; cultures that have lived through the development and use of this Watchtower. The Calahorra Tower is a museum inside and out, but it also serves as a spectacular vantage point. From the highest point you can see the Roman Bridge of Cordoba, the Mosque-Cathedral, and the charming rooftops of the Historic Center around it.
